Canberra and the A.C.T.
(Australian Capital Territory)
"A lady came up to me on the street and pointed at my
suede jacket. 'You know a cow was murdered for that jacket?' she sneered. I
replied in a psychotic tone, 'I didn't know there were any witnesses. Now I'll
have to kill you too."

The rare black swans.
...The streets are wide, the houses set back, the stores and gas stations
hidden, and the lighting perfectly spaced... No billboards and few high
buildings...
1901: Australian states formed into a federation; set aside 900 sq miles of land
in southeastern New South Wales. To end bickering between Sydney and Melbourne.
An international design competition was won by Walter Burley Griffin, a Chicago
architect and associate of Frank Lloyd Wright. Griffin arrived in Canberra in
1913 to supervise the construction, but progress was slowed by two world wars
and the Great Depression. By 1947 Canberra was little more than a country town
with 15,000 inhabitants.
Development increased during the 1950's, and the current population of 300k
makes it the largest Australian inland city.
"Parliamentary Triangle"
Old Parliament House: Abandoned in 1988 when new one opened up. Aboriginals took
over the building in 1992 and proclaimed it the Aboriginal Embassy....
...almost 50% work for the government. New Parliament House: $1 billion, or $70
per capita.
War Memorial
Embassy Row.
Telstra Tower
Lake Burley Griffin... Dammed creek; didn't know how high water would rise...
British carillon: Tiers of bells are played from an organ-like keyboard. The
largest bell weighs more than six tons, while the smallest weighs only 16
pounds.
US Eagle: 240 ft. pole. Not actually a gift. US Defense of Australia.
Mount Ainslie.
...On the way back - Lake George ("The Disappearing Lake"). Sometimes
it's there and sometimes it's not. Other times it's partially there and the land
turns into grazing pastures and is filled with cows.
