Kosty booked us with Wild Frontiers, a tour operator out of South Africa.
Day One
- Monday, September 7th
Depart on a shuttle service from Nairobi to Moshi in
Tanszania. Overnight at the Keys Hotel on a bed & breakfast
basis, dinner for own account. (Climb briefing)
Day Two
- Tuesday, September 8th
Driven to Park Gate, a five hour walk through the
spectacular forest will bring you to Machame Hut at 3000m.
Overnight camping.
Day Three
- Wednesday, September 9th
Ascend to Shira Hut, 3800m. A short descent from Machame
Hut followed by an hour or so of hard uphill to the top of the
forest, then two hours more at a more gentle angle through the
lower moorlands brings one to the top of a rocky bluff. From
here, descend 50m then start traversing westwards, up towards
Shira Cathedral. Total walking time approximately 7 hours.
Overnight camping.
Day Four
- Thursday, September 10th
Barranco Hut 3900m. From Shira Hut, climb slowly for
about 5km, through increasingly barren terrain, straight towards
the cone of Kibo. Traverse across to Barranco Hut. A fairly long
and strenuous day, as the altitude is now beginning to be felt.
Overnight camping.
Day Five
- Friday, September 11th
Continue across to Barafu Hut, another long and tiring
day. Overnight camping.
Day Six
- Saturday, September 12th
Early attempt on summit. You will be woken at
approximately midnight for your final ascent. Dress warmly, and
your guide will lead you "pole pole" to Stella Point on
the crater ridge, and then along the top to Uhuru Peak. Its a
very long day - reaching the peak in the early morning light, and
then descending during the day arriving at Mweka late afternoon.
Overnight camping - Mweka.
Day Seven
- Sunday, September 13th
Descend to Park Gate, approximately 4 hours steady
downhill walk. Met and transferred to Moshi town to catch the
Davanu shuttle at 1100hrs to depart for Nairobi. Overnight at the
Mayfair Court Hotel on a bed & breakfast basis.
