Around the corner or around the globe

"The difference between a .250 hitter and .300 hitter is one hit every twenty times at bat."
- Unknown, but true.

I love to travel - simply love it. The world has so much wonder, beauty, culture, and diversity. There's nothing more exhilarating than seeing parts of the world few people think of visiting or meeting people from different cultures that, despite facades, are really not too different from ourselves. Assuming, that is, that you spend time getting to know yourself.

World Map

My current take on a world map, but still in its infancy stages...

(1/29/03)

A highlight from one of my Business School Applications written in November 2001. I think it provides a good snapshot into my love for travel and is a fitting addition to my travels homepage...

"Immersing myself in vastly different cultures during my most formative years has ingrained in me a passion to explore and experience the variety and wonder different parts of the world have to offer. I have chosen to encounter far reaches of the globe with every opportunity and experience its diversity with friends and family. My sister and I battle each other for the greatest number of Third World immunization shots. I bring my camera with me to capture just a sliver of nature’s splendor or the expression of hardship in Bangkok’s tuk-tuk drivers. Adventure travel is a priceless education, but it also rewards its practitioners with an inner peace and distinctive personal growth.

Witnessing the sun crest over the horizon from my 19,336-foot perch on Mount Kilimanjaro, for example, synthesized my thoughts. Three weeks into a journey that took me through Asia and Africa returning from my Australian transfer, my friend and I had reached the summit, and I had achieved a point of personal reflection. I had enjoyed weeks of personal growth, experiencing parts of the world Americans rarely see, but, more importantly, reflected on my life and recent journey. When I have the opportunity to travel, I am always most thankful for the people and experiences that have made my life so personally rewarding. They help me summit each of my "mountains," including Kilimanjaro or the Inca Trail, but also personal challenges like the tragic loss of my best friend from high school. My friends and I have jumped out of planes, bungeed off bridges, gone scuba diving through reefs, spelunked through cavernous wonders, and crawled over treacherous peaks. My mind usually focuses on life’s important elements: my friends, family, adventures, travels, and laughter."

I took a week off during the summer of '95 and biked solo 700 miles to Rhinelander, Wisconsin and back after seeing my grandmother and cousins.
