Weekends

Life is all about taking advantage of opportunity...

"Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country."
- Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry

I was thinking the other day... (Oh oh!) Seriously though, too many good people let life slip away one day at a time and before they know it they're asking, "What happened? There was so much I wanted to see... So much I wanted to do..." It's simple. Everyone has at least two weeks of vacation every year - let's call it three to be generous. But what about weekends? Assuming three weeks of vacation still leave 49 other weeks - or 98 days. More than 460% MORE than all your vacation combined? And what did you do with all this time last year? It doesn't take flying on a jet to appreciate weekends - it just takes a trip downtown, a drive to a nearby state, or a jump on a cheap super-saver fare... So my advice, if anyone out there is either (a) reading this and or (b) wanting it, it to take advantage of those 98 days...

I also enjoyed a weekend down in Indianapolis to witness the Indianapolis 500.  We sat near the finish line across from the pits, the only real action you can actually see.  ;)

One weekend brought me out to Washington DC for the 4th of July.  I enjoyed getting together with the many Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers that were in the area and enjoyed this view of the Smithsonian.

Door County, Wisconsin - Summer 2000

With more miles of shoreline, more state parks and more lightouses than any other county in the United States, the Door peninsual is sure to enthrall you.  With its limestone bluffs, sand beaches and rural farms, Door County is a natural haven from the stress of daily life.  The waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan give the peninsual more than 250 miles of shoreline, ensuring that you are never more than a few minutes from a relaxing water view.  The coastlines of Door County are dotted with more than 40 isalnds, many of which provide boaters a safe and scenic anchorage.  Ten lighthouses still guard the harbors and islands of the county.

Stellwagen Bank (near Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod) is an underwater plateau of sand and gravel located a few miles north of the tip of Cape Cod.  Stellwagen Bank is full of life, supporting huge quantities of plankton; large numbers of fish of all sizes and the humpbacks, fin whales and other marine mammals who come here to feed on them.
Thanks to many years of effort by the Center for Coastal Sutides and other organizations, Stellwagen Bank was designated a National Marine Sanctuary in 1992.

Moses Nickerson House - "Where Memories Begin..." - George and Linda Watts, Innkeepers
508-945-5859 or www.capecodtravel.com/mosesnickersonhouse
"Elegant, romantic inn, built in 1839 by whaling captain Moses Nickerson in the seaside village of Chatham, Cape Cod.  Unforgettable charm of by-gone days, beautiful gardens, queen size beds, private baths, and gourmet breakfasts served in our glass-enclosed garden room."
"During the 1800's whaling was an important industry in the fishing village of Chatham, beautifully located on the elbow of Cape Cod.  In 1839, whaling captain Moses Nickerson, built a large, rambling white house for his family within walking distance of Chatham Harbor.  Today, the house with its wide pine floor boards, many fireplaces and colorful gardens, still retains the character of by-gone days.  Decorated with antique furnishings and oriental rugs, the inn exudes unforgettable charm."

Room 1: "Immediately the four poster antique bed hand painted with beautiful flowers captures your attention.  A lovely antique hand painted Armoire, along with a blue velvet settee, fireplace & oriental carpet complete the romantic mood.  Located on the 1st floor in the front of the inn with French doors that open onto the front porch.
